November Quiz-Famous Liars

Most people don't want to be famous for lying, but the following people will be, for better or worse, remembered for the lies they were accused of telling.

1. ____________________ After his autobiography A Million Little Pieces became a bestseller thanks to Oprah Winfrey selecting it for her book club, it was discovered that important parts of the book had been fabricated.

2. ____________________ In 2003, the New York Times reporter was caught plagiarizing and making up parts of his stories. He resigned and published a book in 2004 called Burning Down My Masters' House: My Life at the New York Times.

3. ____________________ The 42nd President of the United States. Lied under oath about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky and subsequently, in 1998, became the second president in U.S. history (the first was Andrew Johnson) to be impeached by the House of Representatives.

4. ____________________ The 37th President of the United States. After it came to light that he had been involved in illegal activities, including wiretapping and harassment of political opponents in the Watergate scandal, he lied and tried to cover up the misdeeds. The truth eventually came to light and he resigned before he could be impeached.

5. ____________________ A German baron who served in the military and returned home with tall tales about his adventures. He reportedly told people that he'd traveled to the moon, ridden cannonballs, and escaped from a swamp by pulling himself out by his own hair. A psychological disorder in which someone feigns illness in order to get attention is named after him.

6. ____________________ His “Song of Myself” was not actually about himself, but about a blond neighbor boy named Todd.

7. ____________________ He never actually stayed at Walden Pond, relying instead on the observations of a series of stringers and unpaid interns.

8. ____________________ He set out to serve in the Ambulance Corps during World War I, but got no closer to action than the 1918 Wimp Convention and Exposition in Gibraltar. His famous wartime injury was reportedly the result of “power tanning.”
9. ____________________ said, “I'm going to spend the rest of my life looking for the real killer.”

10.____________________ said "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

11.____________________ said, “I would never withhold love from my children. There are plenty of people who have thought me too loving.”

12. ____________________ said “I had no prior knowledge of the planned assault on Nancy Kerrigan.”

13. “I am the daughter of the tsar of Russia,” was said by ____________________.

14. “Second-hand furniture dealer” was printed on the business card of ____________________.

Can you believe our book club began a year ago this month? How time flies! Our little club has grown from a loosely organized group of women to a club with a name, its own website and a dues-paying member list!

Our November meeting will be Monday, November 12 at 7:00 at Susan O's house. We will be discussing Little Bitty Lies by Mary Kay Andrews.

Unfortunately, there was a problem with the poll and it would not allow everyone to vote. We will vote on our December book at our November meeting. We will also draw names for the ornament exchange. Please let me know if you will not be at book club next week and you would like to participate so we can put your name in the hat!

Also, please remember to pay your birthday money to Kim Anderson. $5 is due each month to pay for our birthday gifts. You are welcome to pay ahead, not just monthly. In fact, I'm sure Kim encourages it!

See you Monday!

It seems early to be thinking of Christmas, but here are the contenders for our December book! Please vote; the poll will be open until Halloween.

The Christmas Train
Journalist Tom Langdon is banned from flying after an argument with overenthusiastic security personnel. He sees a story opportunity--a cross-country train trip at the holidays. Aboard the train, he meets up with a lost love, a screenwriter who's also researching life on Amtrak. Later in the trip, his current girlfriend surprises him by boarding the train. Will he commit to one of his loves or continue his nomadic life?

A Christmas Journey
Nathan Hurst hated Christmas. For the rest of the world it was a day of joy and celebration; for Nathan it was simply a reminder of the event that destroyed his childhood until a snowstorm, a cancelled flight, and an unexpected meeting with a young mother and her very special son would show him that Christmas is indeed the season of miracles.

A Redbird Christmas
When Oswald T. Campbell's doctor orders him to head to the warm South for his health, a chance phone call finds him a room in Lost River, Alabama. In the course of a year there, he has adventures both absurd, such as finding himself in an Accordian Association meeting instead of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, and touching, such as getting involved in the life of an abandoned little girl who loves the lame redbird that has taken up lodgings in the town grocery.

November Book

SO SORRY FOR THE DELAY! I didn't realize until yesterday that we have not picked a book for our November meeting (which is of course, in three weeks!) So (if you will forgive me for not putting it up for a vote due to time constraints) our November book is Little Bitty Lies by Mary Kay Andrews.
Mary Bliss is so busy propping up her best friend, Katharine, who's coping with her broken marriage by drinking gin and buying expensive toys, that she fails to notice her own marriage is in trouble. Her once dependable husband, Palmer, has cleaned out their accounts and left her with a pile of debt. In desperation, she takes a job as a product-demonstration hostess, but her salary will barely cover the electric bill. She allows Katharine to talk her into a cockeyed scheme to have Palmer declared dead so she can collect the insurance. That's when she meets sexy fraud investigator Matt Hayslip, and things really start to heat up. A breezy story fairly brimming with good spirits and feisty humor.

This book is set in Atlanta (Buckhead, I think) and has good reviews. Enjoy!
